Optus expects to significantly increase its 65,000 high-speed broadband internet subscriber base with the launch of new OptusNet Cable plans.
Martin Dalgleish, Managing Director for Optus Consumer and Multimedia said the plans feature an affordable start-up plan for first time users, flat monthly fees and no per megabyte charges.
"Essentially we've made high-speed internet appealing and accessible for Australian consumers," Mr Dalgleish said.
"After months of research into habits and hip pockets, we found customers had two issues in relation to broadband internet - price and risk.
"Customers don't want to pay much more than they are paying for dial-up.
"And they are very concerned about penalty rates for excess usage after hearing broadband horror stories of being charged hundreds of extra dollars for exceeding a monthly allowance," Mr Dalgleish said.
"To combat the price and risk issues we've developed four usage-based plans at different price points - with an entry level plan of $54.95.
"Consumers can now enjoy the speed, reliability and 'the always on' benefits of broadband for about the same price as a dial-up connection including the second line and call charges. We now offer the best value for first time broadband users."
Dalgleish says Optus has removed the risks of broadband by removing penalty rates.
"What sets Optus apart from competitors is that customers are not financially penalised for exceeding their monthly download limits.
"With the new plans, we are pioneering the use of speed limiting.
"Once users reach their limit, the speed of their service is slowed. This means customers can stay connected for the entire month, continuing to access their email and surf the net, but at a slower speed and at no extra cost.
"While our competitors use penalty rates and usage caps on traffic, OptusNet users know their monthly fee is fixed. With OptusNet Cable there is no bill shock. Plus our customers enjoy the flexibility to move between plans each month until they find a plan that is right for them," Mr Dalgleish said.
